Acts 27:29 Fearing that we would be dashed against the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight.

There are many versions of the Four Anchors sermon, but essentially every person has four anchors in life. The anchors are, what is inside yourself - that is our relationship with God including your personal and unshakeable faith; what is outside of yourself - your relationships with other people of which family and friends are the most imporant; the talents you have been given - your skills and ability to work and care for you and your family; andi what is inside your wallet and how you manage your wallet (your financial life).

The people that end up in a Drug and Alcohol rehabilitation centre, or find themselves destitute on the street, have relied on only one or two anchors in life, while destroying the others. Eventually they reach a point where they have no remaining anchors in their lives. Everyone that enters Eden has one thing in common, they have lost the ability in one way or another, to care for themselves.

The anchor that is inside yourself

‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and heart.’

This is the most important anchor in your life, your relationship with God is not only the most important thing in life, crucially, your relationship with God is your life. Coupled to that is your personal faith, an unshakeable faith that allows you to endure any circumstance with the firm conviction of God's promise. People in the most adverse of circumstance have relied on this anchor alone, and endured.

The anchor that is outside of yourself

‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’

Your relationship with your family, friends and all other people is a most important anchor in life. In traditional communities people have relied on their extended family and neighbours within their village for security in times of need. In our modern world, that is littered with broken relationship and divorce (literally the death of a marriage), relationships are in tatters and is for most people no longer an anchor in life. Restoring this anchor starts with rebuilding your relationships with your family in accordance to God's commandments; restoring relationships with your friends; then continuing to build the family of Christ by the living of-, and the sharing of, a life built on Christ.

The anchor that you have been given

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

God has given us everything we need, according to His plan. It is when we prove to be unworthy custodians of that which God has granted us that this anchor in our lives is eroded. We are the custodians of bodies that God has provided to us and we are obliged to care for and nurture those bodies. We have been given talents in life, and are obliged to cultivate and apply those talents to care for ourselves and our families. Often people rely on this anchor alone (commonly having destroyed the other anchors in their lives), and will then neglect their health and do not cultivate their talents with an appropriate set of skills to provide for themselves. In this way people effectively destroy the only anchor upon which they rely. Nowhere is this destruction of our bodies and our talents more evident, than with people suffering from substance addiction.

The anchor that is called your wallet

'She considers a field and buys it, out of her earnings she plants a vineyard'

The Book of Proverbs contains a wealth of advice on managing your wallet. "Live frugally", "save for a rainy day", "do not spend more than what you earn", "earn an honest wage" are principles that form the basis of building a financial anchor in life according to Christian values. But most importantly, do not deny to God the tithe that is due to Him, both in financial terms and also in your time and resources applied to God's work. Most successful people only think of money in terms of their financial anchor in life being the only anchor they will ever need. What they don't realise is that wealth will come to nothing if it not based on God's Kingdom and managed in accordance to Christian principles.

Have you taken inventory?

Have you taken inventory of the anchors in your life? Have you neglected or destroyed any of them? It all starts with the most important command, 'Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and heart.' It is never too late to rebuild the anchors in your life, and no anchor is ever destroyed to a point where it cannot be rebuilt. And even if every anchor is destroyed in your life, and you have given up hope entirely, there is one more anchor: God has not given up on you, and never will.

Acts 5:38… For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men, you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”

All praise to God that Eden has remained standing for more than 20 years.
